Voopoo Drag X Pro Reviewed

Voopoo Drag X Pro Reviewed

Welcome back everyone. If you’ve been keeping an eye on my reviews, you’ll know that I released a review of the new Voopoo Drag S Pro over the weekend. Yep a new version of the Drag S, Voopoo’s flagship Pod Mod. As you might also be aware, Voopoo have released the follow up to their infamous Drag X device too. These two devices usually go hand in hand, released at the same or similar times, being that they are pretty closely related, with the only real difference being that one has an internal battery and the other, will take a removeable battery with both having slightly differing maximum wattage outputs because of it.

Let’s take a look at what Voopoo have done with the new Drag X Pro!!

Big thanks goes to Voopoo for sending this directly through to me for review!

General Info

You’ve all read my Drag S Pro review right. Well, in it I explain all of the updates that Voopoo have made to these latest Drag S/Drag X Pro devices. I’ll run over them again though. There are a few, both aesthetic, physical as well as functional.

Let’s run through what the Drag X Pro actually is before going on about the improvements.
The Drag X Pro is an external battery (18650/21700) capable Pod Mod, with a maximum wattage of 100 Watts, a 5.5ml e-liquid capacity, 360 degree adjustable airflow, with both button and auto-draw modes, all using Voopoo’s new TPP coils which pump out some amazing flavour and vapour.

The Body

There are some subtle differences and some not so subtle differences to the new model. It’s still a zinc-alloy based frame, with a leather heel, the embossing is a little different, but that’s really it for the main casing.

You’ll notice from the photos above that the Pod connection has changed, it’s now a 2 pin connection instead of 3, the airflow is now a 360 degree adjustable airflow ring, compared with the 180 degree lever that was on the original.
Probably the most notable change here however, is the switch on the front face of the device. The front face is identical to the original, with the exception of this small switch between the adjustment buttons and the USB charging port.
Not only does this switch allow you to lock the device physically, but it can also be set in the device itself, to operate as a Power On/Off switch too. That’s right! No more x5 clicks of the fire button to turn off/on!!

Another notable feature, and it really is a small thing but makes all the difference, is the silicone or rubber strip on the base. It feels so nice putting the device down on the table now. It’s much softer, and stops scratches on the bottom!

The Drag X Pro, also now takes a 21700 battery, or an 18650 battery with a sleeve, compared to the original which only took 18650 batteries.

The POD & Coils

Here’s something new, Voopoo’s new TPP X Pod. It’s been redesigned from the ground up keeping user’s feedback in mind. Voopoo have been careful to make sure this new Pod is compatible with not only all of their older devices that take the PnP Pods, but their new TPP coils. In short it’s basically a Pod that will enable you to run TPP coils on all of your Voopoo Pod Mod products. Don’t worry if you love the original PnP Pods though, you can also use them on the Drag X Pro too.

When I say they’ve been redesigned from the ground up, I mean it. The new TPP X Pod, is made from clear PCTG plastic and stainless steel, whereas the older PnP Pods were entirely tinted PCTG.
This new Pod features, a removable 810 drip tip, a hidden side fill, larger capacity, and slightly different base.

While the 810 removeable drip tip is awesome, and you can use your own on there, you are limited to using drip tips with external o-rings unfortunately. Personally I would have included the o-ring inside the top of the drip tip recess, so that vapers could use even more custom drip tips, but I’m assuming they have their reasons for doing it like this.

The capacity of the TPP X Pod has increased, you can now fit 5.5mls of e-liquid in there, where you could only get 4.5mls into the older PnP pods.

The most noticeable change on this Pod however, is the new way of filling. Gone are the days where you need to take the Pod off of the device to fill, the new TPP X Pod has a lockable rotating ring around the top that you can spin around to reveal the ‘top/side’ fill port. The fill port is covered by a silicone plug, but once you’ve revealed the silicone plug, pull it open (you’ll need fingernails) you’ll find the fill hole is quite a decent size to fit almost all e-liquid nozzles into for filling.

The Drag X Pro ships with two different TPP coils for the TPP X Pod, and they both perform quite well, a testament to their huge wicking holes and ability to suck a lot of juice into them. There is a downside to this though, over saturation, and as was with previous Pods, you’re going to find a small puddle of e-liquid under the Pod if you leave your device sitting for a length of time.

  • TPP-DM2, 0.2Ω Coil
This coil has a wattage range of 40-60 Watts and is your less thirsty coil out of the two.
I experienced a lot of seepage with this one, so if you have to leave it for a while, take the pod out and store it upside down, to avoid puddles.
  • TPP-DM3, 0.15Ω Coil
This one is rated for use at 80-100 Watts. Best used with a 21700 battery, and perfect for those who like to run a higher wattage.

Airflow

The improved Drag X Pro, now ships with a 360 degree airflow adjustment ring around the top, it has a nice etched pattern for grip and even comes with a secondary airflow hole to the cyclops slot for even more airflow options.
The adjustment is silky smooth, and has a nice resistance to it, so you can be confident that your airflow won’t adjust easily while it’s in your bag or your pocket.

One of the big changes with the Drag X Pro, is that it now also comes with an auto-draw function as well as button firing, just like it’s little brother, the Drag S Pro. I love that Voopoo have done this, there are a lot of vapers that like the auto-draw and they would have missed out if wanting a mod with an external battery.

Nothing has really changed as far as the base of the Pod and coil is concerned, Voopoo’s TPP coils still protrude below the bottom of the Pod with the air coming in from below the Pod. While this helps fit in with Voopoo’s design of the airflow adjustment, it does add an extra vector for e-liquid seepage, and you may find a small pool of e-liquid under your pod if you leave the device for a while, and the cotton over-saturates. I’ve noticed this is a bit hit or miss, some coils do it, some don’t, but the extra wicking capability of the TPP coils makes this more likely to happen.

Battery

As an improvement over it’s predecessor, the Drag X Pro is now able to not only take 18650 batteries (with sleeve) but 21700 batteries too. This allows a higher maximum wattage for the device. Of course, the new Drag X Pro is also now using Voopoo’s latest Gene Fan 3.0 chipset too, which has seen an increase in voltage output to 8.5Volts, for a more even power output for a longer stretch of the operating time.

The battery bay is similar to the original Drag X, but this time around you’ll find a small switch on the base that you need to slide across to open the spring loaded swing door. It adds a little more security to the door, and the latch working this way also adds to the longevity of it.

The USB Type C charge port is back and you’ll get a charge rate of 5V/2.5A for some pretty fast charging. It also acts as a software upgrade point, which you can download the latest update from Voopoo, to not only get the latest firmware, but some additional functionality too (Temperature mode)

Filling

As mentioned earlier, filling the Pod has changed. No longer will you need to remove the Pod to fill from the bottom, the new TPP X Pod is fitted with a locking rotating ring around the top that you rotate around to reveal the silicone plug and fill port. A nice addition, but you will need fingernails to pull the silicone plug up, the recess is quite small.
The actual fill port itself is a nice size and you’ll get most e-liquid bottle nozzles in there without issues.

Any Leaks?

Yes there is. Just like all of the other devices that use the TPP coils, you’ll get some seepage. These coils provide such a dense vape and saturate so much that they have a tendency to oversaturate when left idle. As a consequence and due to the coil base protruding from the Pod base, e-liquid slowly works it’s way down the coil and out of the air inlet below, leaving a small pool of e-liquid on your contacts.

The original PnP Pods did this too, but the TPP coils are more notorious for it. Unfortunately it’s all part and parcel for such saturation of the cotton, and until Voopoo close this section up, and fit an extra oring on the coils and have the base sit flush with the Pod base, it will happen.

The good news, the top of the device is pretty well sealed, and a quick wipe with a tissue from time to time will get rid of it before it pools up and begins coming out of the airflow. An irritating bit of maintenance, but on a coil that needs to saturate so much to push out the dense vapour that it does, is no real surprise.

Usage

Using the Drag X Pro is super simple. The features are easy to find, and adjustment is fairly intuitive.

  • Off/On (first time) Press fire button x5 times
  • Lock the device : Press fire button x3 times
  • Clear puff counter: Press fire + down button
  • Configure switch/Change modes : hold up + down buttons

Pros:

  • Excellent design and nice to hold
  • Improved eliquid capacity
  • Improved battery capacity
  • Improved airflow control
  • Improved filling
  • Gene Fan 3.0 chipset with boost for more even power
  • Higher wattage output
  • All new Power/Lock switch

Cons:

  • Fill plug can be difficult to unplug
  • Usual e-liquid seepage under pod due to oversaturated coils
  • No way to lock just wattage

Where to Buy:

You can pick up the Voopoo Drag X Pro directly through Voopoo’s online store for about $55 USD, which is quite a good price for what you get.

Conclusion

The Drag X Pro is a huge improvement over the original that was released a few years ago. Capacity has been improved across the board, with 5.5mls e-liquid capacity in the new TPP X Pod, larger battery capacity with the use of the 21700 battery, and maximum wattage pushed out to 100 Watts thanks to the new Gene Fan 3.0 chipset.

There are a few bugbears that I found could be a little more polished, mainly things such as the fill port, and not being easily able to open the rubber gasket to fill, and the removable drip tip needing to be one with an external o-ring, but all in all, the improvements greatly outweigh the negatives.

If you’re used to using Voopoo’s pod mods, this will be an excellent addition to your collection, if you’re considering one over another device, do be aware that you might get some seepage as these coils are really juice hungry, and tend to oversaturate.

Some really nice work here Voopoo!

PS. One more thing. Please put a wattage lock in your list of things to do across the range of your devices.
