Voopoo Drag S Pro Reviewed

Voopoo Drag S Pro Reviewed

Voopoo are the kings of the Pod Mod these days. When they released their original Drag S & Drag X devices a year or so ago, they made huge waves with vapers clambering to get their hands on one. They were a form factor we’d never seen before, a Pod device that could push out some huge wattage compared to what was already available, and not only that, the placement of the Pod directly onto the base with a 360 degree fit was something that was a first for the vaping world.

Fast forward to today, and there have been a multitude of models or variances on the Drag S and Drag X including the ‘Plus’ models, and even a similar device with a different name, the “Argus”. I’m not looking at any of those today however, because Voopoo have rejigged their original design, and released their “Pro” versions! I’m going to split these into 2 separate reviews, with this being the first.

Let’s take a look at what Voopoo have done with the new Drag S Pro!!

Big thanks goes to Voopoo for sending this directly through to me for review!

General Info

A “Pro” version of a device wouldn’t exactly be a “Pro” without some improvements right? Well, that’s exactly what Voopoo have done. They’ve listened to the feedback from the vaping community on their original devices, and tweaked this release with a few really cool changes.

Visually you might not think a lot has changed, but there are a lot of small modifications that all add up. While most of the changes are functional, there are some nice little physical additions too. I won’t go through them now, but in each section of the review below.

The new Drag S Pro, is an internal battery powered Pod Mod, with a maximum wattage of 80 Watts, 3000mah battery capacity, 5.5ml e-liquid capacity, 360 degree adjustable airflow, with both button and auto-draw functions, all using Voopoo’s new TPP coils to pump out some impressive vapour.

The Body

The body is similar to the previous model, staying faithful to the original design, with padded leather embossed heel, and a zinc alloy frame. There are some small changes here though.

The Pod connection has changed from having 3 connection points to now having 2, the airflow adjustment has become a ring, compared to the original’s toggle/slide switch, and my favourite change, actually addition for that matter, the new switch on the front of the device, between the adjustment buttons and charging port. This new switch is also configurable to operate either Power On/Off, or Device Lock/Unlock. A switch to turn it On/Off instead of 3 button presses? Yes please!!

Another nice little addition to the Drag S Pro is the rubber strip on the base of the device, it’s a nice addon, and means you’re mod sits nicely on the table and doesn’t get scratched. (it wont scratch the table either!)

The POD & Coils

Introducing the new TTP X Pod. This is a new Pod that Voopoo have designed for the Drag S Pro and Drag X Pro. It’s not limited to those however, as it is backward compatible with most other Voopoo Pod Mod devices. And in turn, you can also use the older PnP Pods on these 2 new devices too!

Gone is the simple tinted PCTG plastic, and in it’s place is a blend of stainless steel and “clear” PCTG, so that you can see your eliquid level better. An 810 sized removeable drip tip has also found it’s way onto the TPP X Pod, so you can put your favourite (o-ringed) drip tips on too. (only drip tips with external orings will fit)

The new pod has a bigger capacity than the original PnP Pods, this time fitting a huge 5.5mls rather than the original 4.5mls.

The most noticeable change on this Pod however, is the new way of filling. Gone are the days where you need to take the Pod off of the device to fill, the new TPP X Pod has a lockable rotating ring around the top that you can spin around to reveal the ‘top/side’ fill port. The fill port is covered by a silicone plug, but once you’ve revealed the silicone plug, pull it open (you’ll need fingernails) you’ll find the fill hole is quite a decent size to fit almost all eliquid nozzles into for filling.

The Drag S Pro ships with two different TPP coils for the TPP X Pod, and they both perform quite well, a testament to their huge wicking holes and ability to suck a lot of juice into them. There is a downside to this though, over saturation, and as was with previous Pods, you’re going to find a small puddle of eliquid under the Pod if you leave your device sitting for a length of time.

  • TPP-DM1, 0.15Ω Coil
This coil has a best wattage between 60 – 80 Watts and just like most of Voopoo’s coils does this with ease, it provides a really dense vape for those looking for quite an open DTL airflow.
  • TPP-DM4, 0.3Ω Coil
This one is rated for use between 32 – 40 Watts and is also a great little coil. Again just like all of Voopoo’s coils it provides a nice dense warm vape, but is more suited to those who like to run a lower wattage to save on battery life.

Airflow

There is a new 360 degree airflow ring around the top of the device, replacing the old toggle/slide switch for airflow adjustment. This also has a slightly different airflow selection, with a smaller hole as well as a cyclops style airflow hole, so you’ve got even more adjustments to choose from. The ring moves smoothly with a nice resistance to it so that it doesn’t self adjust, and stays where you want it to.

Nothing has really changed as far as the base of the Pod and coil is concerned, Voopoo’s TPP coils still protrude below the bottom of the Pod with the air coming in from below the Pod. While this helps fit in with Voopoo’s design of the airflow adjustment, it does add an extra vector for e-liquid seepage, and you may find a small pool of e-liquid under your pod if you leave the device for a while, and the cotton over-saturates. I’ve noticed this is a bit hit or miss, some coils do it, some don’t, but the extra wicking capability of the TPP coils makes this more likely to happen.

Battery

The battery size has been improved from the original 2500mah to 3000mah, maximum wattage has been upped from 60Watts at the top end to maximum 80Watts, and of course the new Drag S Pro is using Voopoo’s new Gene Fan 3.0 chip which has a boost function, able to push a higher voltage than previous models. This means you’re actually going to get the wattage advertised and even power for longer, whereas the older models would have the power drop off slightly as the battery drains.

The USB Type C charge port is back and you’ll get a charge rate of 5V/2.5A for some pretty fast charging. It also acts as a software upgrade point, which you can download the latest update from Voopoo, to not only get the latest firmware, but some additional functionality too (Temperature mode)

Filling

As mentioned earlier, filling the Pod has changed. No longer will you need to remove the Pod to fill from the bottom, the new TPP X Pod is fitted with a locking rotating ring around the top that you rotate around to reveal the silicone plug and fill port. A nice addition, but you will need fingernails to pull the silicone plug up, the recess is quite small.
The actual fill port itself is a nice size and you’ll get most e-liquid bottle nozzles in there without issues.

Any Leaks?

Unfortunately yes. Just like the PnP Pods the TPP X Pod suffers the same ‘seeping/leaking’ issues its predecessor had. Because the coil protrudes from the base of the Pod, the airflow section of the Pod is exposed, so if left sitting, the wicking can over saturate and seep juice down through the air inlet of the coil. You might be lucky and get a coil that doesn’t over saturate, but in my experience with both PnP and TPP coils, you’re likely to have this happen from time to time.

The good news, the top of the device is pretty well sealed, and a quick wipe with a tissue from time to time will get rid of it before it pools up and begins coming out of the airflow. An irritating bit of maintenance, but on a coil that needs to saturate so much to push out the dense vapour that it does, is no real surprise.

Usage

Using the Drag S Pro is super simple. The features are easy to find, and adjustment is fairly intuitive.

  • Off/On (first time) Press fire button x5 times
  • Lock the device : Press fire button x3 times
  • Clear puff counter: Press fire + down button
  • Configure switch/Change modes : hold up + down buttons

Pros:

  • Excellent design and nice to hold
  • Improved eliquid capacity
  • Improved battery capacity
  • Improved airflow control
  • Improved filling
  • Gene Fan 3.0 chipset with boost for more even power
  • Higher wattage output
  • All new Power/Lock switch

Cons:

  • Fill plug can be difficult to unplug
  • Usual e-liquid seepage under pod due to oversaturated coils
  • No way to lock just wattage

Where to Buy:

You can pick up the Voopoo Drag S Pro directly through Voopoo’s online store for about $55 USD, which is quite a good price for what you get.

Conclusion

The Drag S Pro is a significant improvement over the original, and shows that Voopoo listens to it’s users regarding new functionalities, and general updates. All of the changes have streamlined the Drag S Pro to not only be a more efficient tool, but have made things easier to manage, with the GUI being even more intuitive, and easy to use.

Higher capacities are also a welcome change, with larger battery, e-liquid capacity and maximum wattage. The Gene Fan 3.0 chipset has done a lot to make that happen, and is quite an impressive quick firing piece of kit.

Of course I have found a few annoyances, namely the small area that is given to lift the fill port plug being a little cumbersome, and the ongoing issue of e-liquid seepage under the Pod, and there being no way to lock just the wattage. I do wish that they would sort the latter two out at some point, as they really are the only things standing in the way of Voopoo’s Drag range of being pretty much the perfect setup.

A lot of great improvements Voopoo, nice work!
