Hellvape Fat Rabbit RTA Review

Hellvape Fat Rabbit RTA Review

We’re seeing a lot happen out of Hellvape this year, they’re definitely releasing some interesting stuff. Out of left field was the Arez 120 mod, milled out of a single piece of alluminium, and now they’ve extended their Dead Rabbit range out to include not only a dual airflow controlled offering, but a 28.4mm tank to boot!

This’ll be a tank warmly welcomed by those who love their large devices and tanks, and I think they’ve done a great job, making sure to bridge the gap between having a lot of options, and producing a tank that is also really easy to setup and build on. I won’t prattle on.

Let’s check out Hellvape’s Fat Rabbit RTA!

Big thanks goes to Vaporstate, who sent this out for the purposes of review!

General Info & Features

This is it, the large bulky, tonka tough tank that everyone has been looking forward to from Hellvape.

Following on from Hellvape’s success with the Dead Rabbit series of RDA’s and Tanks, this latest release, the “Fat Rabbit RTA” is the largest of the bunch. Measuring in at a whopping 28.4mm in diameter and 43.8mm tall, this RTA is a bit of a beast, and you’re going to need a beasty device to put it on! Im running mine on my Wotofo MDura mod at the moment, and it sits really nicely. A great beefy setup.

It’s not just the size of the Fat Rabbit RTA that will surprise you, it also has some really nice specs, as well as a nifty dual airflow control, to not only regulate air come up from under the coil, but also air coming in at the sides too!

This beast is of course made from top notch steel, 304 Stainless Steel in fact, and comes with a 5.5ml e-liquid capacity, quarter turn fill cap, and base, and a Postless deck that allows both dual and single coils.

The Deck

The Fat Rabbit RTA’s postless deck is pretty big. You’ll easily fit two 3.5mm diameter coils or larger in here without issue. I originally set it up to use the coils that came in the box which were 2×0.37 3.0mm fused claptons coming out to about 0.16 Ohms, but they quickly got hotspots I couldn’t resolve, so ended up replacing them with some killer aussie coils from Ohms by Ohwee, these excellent NI80 6 wrap 3mm ID claptons.

Anyway, the Fat Rabbit RTA has a really nice clean post-less deck with the air coming up through the centre, via the twelve bottom airflow and inset coil slots on either side of it. The small flat head screws to tighten your coil legs are tucked out of the way off to the side. Flat heads, nice!

If you take a look at the above images, you’ll see that the wicking ports are really large kidney shaped ports, while you can set this up single coil, dual coil is best due to such huge wicking ports, unless you use a lot of cotton through a large single coil, like a 5mm diameter.

The deck attaches onto the rest of the tank bayonet style, so you’ll only need to give it a 1/4 turn, and the threading and action is super smooth. So smooth that you might find the base slightly unscrew after you’ve refilled unscrewed the top fill cap a few times. I would have preferred this to have a bit more thread on it, so it’s more of an effort / not as easy to accidentally unscrew it. It’s not a really big issue though, just gotta make sure you check it every so often.

Building on the RTA

Building on the Fat Rabbit RTA is a breeze. As a bonus, Hellvape also include a coil leg measuring tool, so you can make sure you’re coil legs are just the right length.
Pop your coils in, tighten the screws, manoeuvre your coils into a good position, dry fire and wick and you’re done.
You don’t really need to worry about the coils being too far apart either, the side airflow will help condense the airflow in from both directions.

Filling

Filling is also super easy, almost too easy. The top cap unscrews a 1/4 turn allowing you access to a huge filling area, in fact two really large kidney shaped fill ports on either side. They are so large you’ll find you’ll just push your e-liquid nozzle in there, and go to town, you can not only fill easily, but super quickly too.

Airflow

The Fat Rabbit RTA introduces something really cool to the vape world, dual airflow controls. Yep that’s right, you heard it right. While the idea of directional or dual airflow is not a new thing, providing dual airflow adjustment rings is.

Hellvape have given us two huge cyclops style airflow holes with rotating adjustment ring for the bottom airflow that comes up from underneath the coils through the internal 12 holes you can see on the deck.
They’ve also given us a secondary airflow ring a little higher up, with 4 available airflow holes on each side in order to adjust the airflow that comes in from the side of the coils.

What is really cool about this is you can tailor the vape to exactly how you like. If you prefer side airflow, close off the bottom and open up the top airflow. Personally Ive found an almost fully open bottom airflow, and a halfway setting on the top airflow ring to be perfect for me.

Being a big tank, you might expect this to be really airy. It’s not. Hellvape have made sure to give us plenty of air for all of you high wattage users, but because of the dual airflow control, it’s divided amongst the two options. Opening both adjustments up will give you close to a completely open airflow.

Any Leaks?

I did experience a little bit of seepage from the airflow holes when I’d set it up with minimal wicking. This only really seeped when I placed the tank on it’s side though, so keep in mind that more cotton is likely needed here, due to the really large wicking ports, and you’ll do ok. I haven’t had any issues since using more cotton in the build.

Pros:

  • Huge size
  • Post-less deck
  • Dual airflow control
  • Big fill ports
  • 1/4 turn assembly for deck and top cap
  • Easy building

Cons:

  • Huge size
  • You’ll need a large mod to put it on!

Where to Buy:

You can pick up the Hellvape Fat Rabbit RTA locally from Vaporstate’s online store. They’ve got them listed for the $60 AUD mark, which is an excellent price.

Conclusion

I’ve had a really great experience with the Fat Rabbit RTA. It’s a pleasure to build on, and wick, and the flexible airflow controls are a brilliant addition.

I particularly like that the top fill cap is only 1/4 turn, exposing a huge filling area, you really can’t miss.
Throw in some top notch build quality, and I think Hellvape have kicked a goal here.

If you love your large tanks, you can’t go past this one! Full marks!
