eJuice Review 348: Nonna’s Tiramisu by Sydney Vape Co

I’m onto the fourth of the Sydney Vape Co range of eliquids today, that means I’m halfway through their 8 flavours! It’s been a pretty diverse range of profiles so far, and expertly created, I might add.

Today’s flavour is another dessert, a rich complex one, that I have very much been looking forward to since the beginning of these reviews, so let’s on with it!

Today I’ll be reviewing “Nonna’s Tiramisu” from Sydney Vape Co
(This eliquid was supplied by the vendor.)

Flavour Description:

Tiramisu – just the way Nonna makes it. Ladyfingers dipped in coffee with generous layers of mascarpone cream, dulce de leche and a drizzle of cocoa.

The Review:

I love Tiramisu, it is one of my favourite desserts. And being that my wife is Italian, having shared many a meal and dessert with her extended family means that I’ve been spoilt with some of the best Tiramisu’s going around. You could say that I know my Tiramisu!

While Tiramisu can be made several ways, generally it will consist of Ladyfinger biscuit dipped in coffee & marsala (wine), a heavy cream base (or egg whites) mixed with mascarpone cheese folded over the top, which is then sprinkled with grated chocolate and cocoa.

Because there is so much going on, it is important to get everything right, as one thing out of place, will throw the whole profile out.

Individual Notes

The coffee here is not the nicest. Granted, there aren’t a lot of good coffee concentrates around these days, many are forced to produce their own in order to avoid the usual coffee ‘grounds’ feel from the commercial concentrates. These guys have done a good job in trying to mask the imperfections of the concentrate, unfortunately it is still a little noticeable in the coffee profile itself. It is a dry grainy coffee, rather than a slightly bitter richer flavour.

There is some cocoa here, it’s liberally added, and doesn’t shine past the coffee as much as it should or with chocolate added, but it is present and that is important.

The cream here is reasonable, it’s a smooth and thick textured cream with light vanilla tones.

The biscuit is very light, too light to notice the profile of it unfortunately, but like the cocoa it is there.

What I do not pickup on whilst vaping is the marsala, or any other type of replacement for it. I pick it up when putting a little on my finger and tasting it, but through vaping, I’m not noticing it at all.

Inhale & Exhale

The inhale is of course coffee, being that it is the base of the entire flavour. I notice a little bit of thick cream in here at this point too.

On the exhale the coffee and cream intensify, as I notice a little bit of a biscuit appear, very lightly I might add. So lightly that you may not notice it, but it is there. As the vape continues, cocoa appears toward the end, adding a little richness, and complexity.

Unfortunately the coffee takes over, and completely dominates with a dry bitterness throughout, until the cocoa comes to the rescue at the very end.

Final thoughts

Unfortunately, “Nonna’s Tiramisu” has missed the mark for me. It was a good effort, but Tiramisu has got to be spot on, otherwise it’s just a coffee cake, or at worst, a creamy coffee flavour.

In particular I found the coffee completely dominating, rather than being a base, too ‘groundy’ and not rich enough, and the cream and biscuit being far too light.

The lack of liquor can obviously be forgiven, as not all Tiramisu’s have it, but it would have been nice, as I believe it adds a little more complexity and helps to balance the coffee out, which it certainly would have done in this case. A touch of bourban concentrate would have given it that little bit of kick that it needs.

All in all, this is definitely a Tiramisu, it has most of the nuances, and is recognizable as a coffee based dessert rather than coffee and cream. A stronger cream with the addition of some chocolate, or liquor note would have added some much needed complexity, and made sure that the dry-ish coffee profile didn’t take over.

Haku with slam cap running a single 0.17 ET coil from “Bombers Coils” on a mech mod.
