Smok RPM 2 Pod Review

Smok RPM 2 Pod Review

Welcome back all, I’ve got another hardware review for you today, and I have to say straight away, that this one has impressed me a lot. It may have a few cons, but overall, this is really well designed device that puts out some great flavour and vapes really well!

As you all likely know Smok have been in the game for many years now, constantly pumping out new products, and pushing the boundaries for cheap and cheerful devices. They’re well known for their massive range of products and constant rotation of new pieces of kit!

Today, I’ve got another POD device to show you, a little larger than most, that you could almost call a POD Mod with it’s huge power and equally large on-board battery!

Introducing the Smok RPM2 Pod kit!

Big thanks goes to Smok for sending this through for me to review!

First Impressions

This thing is beefy. You’re definitely not getting a super slim, slip it in your pocket device, this beast is a bit of a hybrid. But there is also a reason for that. Rivalling even the most powerful single battery devices, the Smok RPM2 Pod brings home the battery life with it’s 2000mAH on-board battery and whopping 80Watt maximum output, putting this device firmly in the POD/POD Mod category.

Following in from the large battery and power output, is a huge 7ml e-liquid capacity, making sure you fill up less often when on the go!

On first look, the RPM2 Pod is rock solid, built from Zinc Alloy, with mostly metallic finishes on offer, the build quality is simply excellent, with a flawless outer coat and zero rattle in either the buttons or the POD itself.

Smok really mean business with the RPM2 Pod.

The Main Body

As mentioned earlier, the body is made from zinc alloy with a lovely, flawless anodised/coated outside, a coloured swirl plastic panel on the back and a shiny plastic front panel giving a nice contrast in colour.
You’ll notice the buttons match the outer colour of the mod itself for additional colour matching.

The general shape of it is very cube like, not so round, but with rounded corners instead, and a really really small flat spot on the base. You’re going to need to be careful not to let this one fall over! It’s much better suited laying on it’s side.

From the top down, the rather large POD bay, contains 4 heavy duty magnets, and 2 pins that make contact with your POD, that you simply place into, as the POD easily snaps into place. These magnets are really strong, and there’s simply no way your pod is going to fall out under normal circumstances.

On the front you have a rather large fire button matching both Up and Down buttons as well as the body in finish.

In between them is an impressively bright and spacious OLED colour screen displaying all of the information you might need to know, in what I note, a really clean and open format, really very easy to read. This is quite nice to see, as sometimes POD Mods can have very small displays with limited readability.

Off to the side of the base, you’ll also find a USB-Type C charge port allowing you to charge at a full 1.4 Amps, a very welcome addition.

The POD

In the pack, I received 2 PODs, one for use with RPM coils, and the other for use with Smok’s newer RPM2 coils. Both are otherwise identical, with the coil type clearly marked on the red silicone fill plug on the side.
As with all RPM and RPM2 coils, you simply push them in to install.

The PODS are completely clear with a nice sliver of the POD creating a window allowing you to see juice levels at all times, when inserted into the body of the device. Just like the body, the POD also has 4 powerful magnets, that create a distinct ‘snap’ when inserting the PODs, ensuring that they not only have a really solid connection, but making sure that they do not separate from the main mod easily when in your pocket or out and about.

The duck bill mouth piece is a little strange, and feels unusual in the mouth at first, but when you get used to it, it is quite comfortable, and allows you to take a nice solid draw without having to worry about lip placement or getting burnt lips from higher wattages.

Airflow

It’s not just the battery, e-liquid capacity and general size of the RPM2 Pod that are large, the airflow is huge also. Obviously designed for Direct to Lung vapers, the RPM2 Pod has a fairly wide open airflow, so much so, that some might feel it a little too airy for their liking.

Normally this would be ok, and be more of a positive, because more wattage requires more air, but what kind of ruins things, is the lack of airflow control.

I can understand that, due to being designed for Direct to Lung vapers, a nice wide airflow is warranted, but because this pod device takes both the RPM and RPM2 coils, which are available for various different wattages and vaping styles. I would have thought Smok would want to maximise on that wide audience. An adjustable airflow really would have opened up usage of this device to different users, this is a total oversight on their part unfortunately.

Battery

The on-board battery is an impressive 2000mAH, so you can be sure that even at a decent wattage, you’re battery should last for the bulk of the day.

If it doesn’t, then fear not, Smok have been kind and provided a USB-Type C charging port that charges the battery at a 1.4 Amp load, which should get you a full battery within the hour.

Speaking of battery specs, and how long it will last, I’m really impressed with some of Smok’s latest chip changes. The RPM2 Pod comes with a really clever screen where you can check your battery status, as well as how much longer you have left on your battery. It also tells you how many average puffs you have left before you deplete your charge. Very smart.

Filling

The RPM2 Pods are really simple to fill, just remove the POD, tilt it on it’s side, unplug the silicone plug, and fill it up. Get comfortable because you’ll be there a while, a 7ml POD is nothing to sneeze at!

Any Leaks?

I have had a little seepage from this one, mainly through the bottom of the coils, which really is a coil issue, not a device or POD problem.

This is a little disappointing but not really unexpected. These RPM and RPM2 coils seem to really wick up the juice, it’s what gives them such great flavour, so leaving them to sit for a while is going to result in a little excess juice getting wicked up.

* If you’re going to let this device sit for a few days without vaping it, I recommend removing the POD so that you do not get any juice seepage into the device itself.

Usage

Usage is pretty simple too. The RPM2 Pod has the usual 5 clicks off/on, as well as 3 clicks of the fire button to lock the device.
Holding down both up and down buttons locks and unlocks the wattage.
Holding the Power and down buttons allows you to reset your puff counter.
Holding the Power and up buttons will take you to a screen that shows your battery level and how many puffs you have left before depleting your charge.

Pros:

  • High power output (up to 80w)
  • Large Battery 2000mAH
  • Great flavour from the RPM and RPM2 coils
  • Huge e-liquid capacity (7ml)
  • Instant firing
  • USB Type C charging

Cons:

  • Airflow is not adjustable
  • Slight seepage from coils

Where to Buy:

You can purchase the Smok RPM 2 POD right now directly through the Smoktech online store. It’s priced at approximately $44.99 USD right now, which is a tad on the expensive side, but this is quite a powerhouse.

Conclusion

I love this thing, all things aside, the vape from the RPM2 is smooth, powerful and full of flavour. It’s a total replacement of your typical single battery, single coil setups in one compact and handy form factor.

Having such a decent sized battery and e-liquid capacity as this does, has seen me venturing out just with the one device. Where once I would need to take a few spares to get through a four hour period, not to mention spare eliquid bottles, I can pop this in my pocket and I’m good until I get home.

There are a few cons, the main one being that there is no airflow control, and no way of restricting it. In my opinion, Smok have missed the mark a little here, considering that they are automatically setting aside a large portion of the population who use lower powered coils and more restricted airflow.

Bottom line. If you’re a Direct to Lung vaper, who is looking for a POD device to carry around, you might have just found what you’re looking for. Big wattage, big battery, and huge e-liquid capacity.
