Geekvape Aegis Boost Pro Reviewed

Geekvape Aegis Boost Pro Reviewed

Geekvape have been square in the spotlight over the last few years for producing many fantastic products, some of the most recommended products around in fact. They blew past the POD competition with their original Aegis Boost, and have since then improved on the original design a great deal.

You’ll likely remember the roasting I gave in my review of the original Aegis Boost, due to it’s massive leaking issues as well the messy filling, which they “mostly” addressed in their Boost Plus. This time around, they’ve made even more improvements, and not only that, brought some new coils out to go with it.

Let’s take a look at what Geekvape have done with the new Aegis Boost Pro!!

Big thanks goes to Geekvape for sending this directly through to me for review!

General Info

You’ll instantly recognise the Aegis Pro, it’s so very similar visually to Geekvape’s previous version the Aegis Plus. Same size, same styling, similar POD design, but there are differences.

The Aegis Boost Pro, is a single 18650 powered Pod Mod, with maximum power output of 100 Watts, 6ml e-liquid capacity, colour screen with new, more readable UI, a new three inlet adjustable airflow dial, USB Type-C charge port and new redesigned POD that takes Geekvape’s new P Series coils.

Let’s take a look at it more closely.

The Body

The body of the Aegis Boost Pro is very similar to the Plus, design-wise anyway. You have the same rubber coating and leather heel with stitching continuing the Aegis tradition. It’s IP67 rated with it being water resistant, dust-proof and shock proof, again, continuing in the footsteps of it’s predecessors.

The same control panel is back, as is the external battery screw port at the bottom of the mod. The charging port is again hidden behind a rubber flap, just like the plus, but this time we have a USB Type-C port instead of the old Micro USB.

The only noticeable difference in the body itself is that the maximum wattage is now set at 100 Watts, and the UI of the display has changed. Nothing visually different.

Oh, there is one thing, the POD recess on the Pro also allows Aegis Boost Plus Pods to be used with it. (Yes the PODs are different)

Pod and Coils

While the main body of the Aegis Boost Plus is very much a close match to the Aegis Boost Plus, the PODs have changed. The “Plus” pods were a huge improvement over the original Boost design, getting rid of the 2 piece body that was held together with clips, in favour of a fused seam, to ensure no strange leaking. The new “Pro” pods are similar in this regard, as well as the fill port design, but the general shape, airflow, drip tip, and size of coils used have all changed in an effort to improve the vape even more.

The first noticeable change is the drip tip. No longer a narrower, mouth to lung style drip tip, the Pro, sports an 810 round drip tip, more suitable to direct lung inhales. It bares a unique, custom base, so any of your own drip tips you’d like to put on there, are going to have to be the type with external orings, and long connectors. Your normal friction fit tips won’t work. I hate that they’ve done this. Geekvape should have catered more for those wanting to use custom drip tips, at the very least, left things as they were with 510 drip tips able to be used, instead of putting an extra lip on there, and limiting usage to drip tips with external orings.

The second change, which is an actual improvement, is the airflow controller. On the previous “Plus” there was only the large kidney shaped airflow hole to let the air in. On the “Pro”, Geekvape have added two slots on the underside of the airflow dial to let even more air in. This device with it’s larger coils, and higher wattage, is clearly a DTL device, so that extra airflow is welcomed. The position of this dial has moved slightly from the “Plus” also, so while using a “Plus” Pod on the “Pro” body will work, trying to use a “Pro” Pod on the “Plus” will not.

The last change that has been made is the ability for the Pods to use the new P Series coils, which are much larger than the original Boost series coils. You won’t be able to use the original Boost coils on the “Pro” Pod.

Two P Series coils are included in the box. There isn’t a lot of difference between the two besides the obvious recommended wattages, there really is only 10 Watts difference between them, so they are very similar.

  • 0.2Ohm KA1 Mesh, 60-70W
This coil was my favourite of the two, while it’s a higher wattage coil which means battery life will be a little shorter, I found the flavour and longevity of this one, excelled to the other.
  • 0.4Ohm KA1 Mesh, 50-60W
While this coil didn’t last quite as long, it does have excellent flavour, and provided a nice dense vape. I wonder why Geekvape added two different coils with only 10 Watt usage difference?

Airflow

As I mentioned earlier, the airflow has changed somewhat from the Aegis Boost Plus. This time around, instead of the kidney shaped airflow in the wheel adjustment being at the bottom, its at the top. There have also been 2 additional slots added to the underside of the wheel, to aid even more airflow getting in for a more open DTL draw.

Battery

Geekvape have gone with re-using the 18650 battery configuration from the Aegis Boost Plus here. It’s very much the same, with a screw in cap on the bottom of the device, the only real change with anything to do with the battery is the switch out from Micro USB port to USB Type-C. The charging rate etc, is the same as the Plus too.

I would have liked to have seen the Aegis Boost Pro use a 21700 battery to be honest, and have a provided 18650 battery sleeve adapter. 21700 batteries are beginning to be seen a lot more now, and Geekvape could have future proofed the Aegis Boost Pro by using a 21700 with little to no size difference in the overall device. This is a bit of a missed opportunity to be frank.

Filling

Filling the Boost Pro is very simple. In fact it’s exactly the same as the Boost Plus. Remove the fill plug, fill it up, and plug it back in. No stress no worries.
The newer Plus and Pro Pods are easy enough to see through, to see your e-liquid level, and they’re able to be filled pretty close to 100% without too much trouble. Big win here.

Any Leaks?

None. Absolutely none. The Pods are designed exceptionally well. Finally!
It’s great to see that Geekvape have addressed the original Boost’s leaking issues with later versions.
I’ve had no issues with any leakage or e-liquid ingress at all.
As your coils begin to age, you’ll notice the tiniest bit of seepage, and when I say tiny, I really mean that it’s a minute amount. The new P Series coils seem to hold their e-liquid quite well and do not over-saturate which is fantastic.

Usage

Geekvape have sorted out their user interface again with this model. Previously on the Plus the user interface was a cluttered, and well, ugly. The Boost Pro brings back larger text, with more open space to make everything read a lot easier. Personally, I have no idea why they went with the UI that they did with the Plus, and I’m very happy they’ve fixed it this time around.

Also back are some of the things that have been removed in previous versions. There are various modes available via a quick 3 clicks of the fire button. You can cycle through them to find Power mode, Temperature control modes, VPC and Bypass. There aren’t any specific temperature control modes for Ni or TT, as there is for Stainless, but you can use the more generic TCR mode for it.
There is also a power curve mode (VPC) where you can set your basic powercurve for the first five seconds.

Screen brightness, resetting puff counter and locking resistance settings are also available.

Pros:

  • Solid shape and design
  • IP67 rated
  • Easy fill
  • 18650 external battery powered
  • Fires up to 100 Watts
  • Excellent flavourful coils
  • No leaking
  • USB Type-C
  • Updated User Interface
  • More airflow

Cons:

  • No real MTL option
  • No 21700 only 18650
  • Drip tip limitations

Where to Buy:

You can pick up the Geekvape Aegis Boost Pro directly through Geekvape from the Geekvape online store for around the $50 USD price range. That is a fantastic price for what you get, cheap enough you can afford to grab a spare pack of coils while you’re there!

Conclusion

I am very very pleased with what Geekvape have done with their latest Aegis device. Not that they need my approval, but considering the hell that I went through with multiple of the original Boosts leaking and messy filling, I’m really pleased to see that they’ve listened to feedback and improved on everything.

Top marks also go to their new User Interface, which is much easier to read, and not ugly, like the one on the Aegis Boost Plus. Worth a mention is also the upgrade to USB Type-C charge port instead of the old school Micro USB on their other Boosts. I really like what they’ve done with the airflow too, having those extra airflow slots seems to create a more dense and even more flavourful vape too.

I would have liked to have seen an allowance for a 21700 battery, and considering the size of this device, actually found myself reaching for one, only to remember that it’s only 18650. A 21700 option would have been excellent future proofing and they would have picked a few extra fans up by doing so.

All in all, I’m impressed with this one, and have had nothing but a great experience with it. The coils are fantastic, and quite long lasting, with a higher wattage and more air, the Boost can now boast a true open Direct to Lung draw.

Well done Geekvape! You won me back!
