eLiquid Review: Turkish Baklava by Sydney Vape Co

eLiquid Review: Turkish Baklava by Sydney Vape Co

I’m well under way and in the thick of digging through Sydney Vape Co’s latest iteration of flavours, and all in all I’m finding them all quite good.

The use of complimentary and extra notes in these is a huge step forward in this range being more robust, complex and giving the flavours more dimension.

I’ve been pretty eager to get stuck into this next flavour, lets take a look!

Today, I’ll be reviewing “Turkish Baklava” from Sydney Vape Co.
(This eliquid was supplied by the vendor for review.)

Flavour Description

[From the website]
“Layers of buttery filo pastry topped with crushed nuts soaked in rosewater and drenched in a golden syrup – a delectable vape to pair with your morning coffee.”

The Review

Baklava, we’ve all had it, that sugary moist filo pastry, with thick honey, that sticky pastry leaving honeyed sugar dripping from your fingers as you attempt to eat more than 2 pieces, but just cannot do it, it is just too damned rich to eat too much! This is not the only kind of Baklava out there. Other variations are quite common, some with rose water, others with caramel, and I’ve even seen chocolate layered Baklava (that last one is bound to be pretty rich!)

I’ve tried most of them. And one Baklava that I have tried, is Baklava with Rose Water. I loved it, the rose water was lurking in the background, just remiss of popping out as a primary flavour, always letting the filo and honey come through with the goods, while this musky rose water, sat back and provided a little extra interest, a support if you will, to the other flavours.

Individual Notes

The filo pastry is quite good here, it’s a light and doughy pastry, that really does mimic the real thing quite well. It has a robust and rounded flavour that when combined with the honey/golden syrup offers a sweeter and heavier dessert pastry profile that provides a satisfying vape.

The Honey/Golden Syrup really makes this. Combined with the filo, it creates that dense sweetened pastry that is synonymous with Baklava.
Beware, this honey does have an almost TFA honey odour to it, so others may not appreciate the smell in the air with this one 🙂

The nuts that are in this feel like hazelnut, light with a slight roasted feel, they help provide some depth and character, which works great with the other ingredients.

I think this is Rose Water, however, whatever it is very musky, and while a little would have worked quite well in this, the amount used was far too heavy in my opinion. It changes the profile quite a lot, and makes this indistinguishable as a Baklava with all of that muskiness.

Inhale & Exhale

On the inhale, I instantly notice the sweet filo pastry, it’s quite dense and doughy. The whole profile is actually quite strong from the get go, and is a very full flavoured blend. As the inhale continues, the filo is joined by some sweet golden syrup, more a honey I feel, that sweetens things further, adding some syrupy stickiness and adding even more density to the thick flavour that is already there.

At the height of the inhale, and turning over to the exhale is where I notice not only the hazelnut with it’s slight roasted feel kick in, but also the Rose Water. The nuts provide even more depth to the dense filo, perfectly suited to it in fact and they work really well supporting it and the honey.

It’s at this point the Rose Water hits. It’s light at first, gradually increasing in intensity as you exhale, and with that added intensity also comes some muskiness. At this point through the exhale, you can still make out the filo and honey main profile, but it is totally overpowered by the rose water.
Because of this, the profile breaks down and quickly turns from a pretty good Baklava, to a Rose Water/Musk/Pastry, not a bad flavour in all honesty, just not the Baklava that the description says it is.

“Not a bad attempt at a Baklava, however the Rose Water muskiness is far too overpowering that it masks the filo and honey from really shining.”

Final thoughts

Straight away, as soon as I picked this bottle up, I knew it was going to be either, one of those flavours that absolutely nails it and hits the mark, or ends up slightly out and not quite reaching the profile that it was looking to.

Unfortunately, after vaping it for 2 days, it’s become the latter for me. I’m finding that the Rose water is far to powerful. It creates a muskiness that is so strong that it masks the more important parts, like the filo pastry and the honey/golden syrup. Rose Water is supposed to support the pastry, bring a little dimension to it, not dominate and break down the very profile it should be adding to.

It’s really a shame, as from what I can tell, the underlying filo, honey, sugar is pretty much a spot on Baklava, it has that nice thick body to it, the sugary pastry that leaves a sweetness on the lips, but it is all unfortunately blown over with the strong Rose Hip/Rose Water/Musk tones.

A good effort on this one guys, but tone down the Rose Water please!

Presentation:

As always, Sydney Vape Co, have some impressive presentation. Each bottle comes in it’s own similarly branded box. I received 30ml clear Chubby Gorilla style bottles with black child-proof caps, tamper proof ring-seal, and needle tip dispenser.

The labelling is comprehensive with juice name, respective imagery and company logo front and centre. General warnings, ingredients, bottle size, and even flavour profile are printed on the colour coded matt finish labels.

Most impressive of all is the use of “Born on” and “Batch Number” stamps. This is a great addition to any label, and builds confidence, letting the consumer know how old their bottle of juice really is.

If you haven’t seen them yet, SVC also have some fancy pants sample boxes available, so that you can try all of their flavours in smaller bottles, the whole set is only $59.99 which is some pretty great value!
