e-Liquid Review: Rough from the Chocolatier Vape Co

Let’s talk desserts this week. You’ve seen these all over facebook, you’ve seen the banter over them, and you’re curious to know exactly just how great they are! Well, I’ve got em, I’ll be vaping them, and I’ll be reviewing them all!

If you’re not familiar with the brand, The Chocolatier Vape Co is the brain child of Rob from Vape Vault (which is also another brand of amazing eliquids).

He jumped onto the vape scene a few years back after successfully quitting cigarettes and found a passion for the very thing that helped him. He founded Vape Vault, originally it was primarily a service that provided a collection of eliquids all boxed up from premium brands in the one package called a Vault Box (a bloody great idea!) and now offers those same brands individually from the Vape Vault website.

Welcome to his newest range!

Today, I’ll be reviewing “Rough” from The Chocolatier Vape Co.

(This eliquid was supplied by the vendor for review.)

Flavour Description

[From the website]
“Sweet dollops of milk chocolate folded with roasted coconut shavings, then lightly sprinkled with desiccated coconut. This rich coconut chocolate indulgence will leave you wanting more.”

The Review

Many will be dubious about a chocolate based eliquid range, and of course many will have had some bad experiences with them. Chocolate is difficult to get right, it’s either way over powering and chalky, or is just not strong enough and you only get a whimper of flavour through it.

Not so here! Rob’s done a fabulous job with all of these new flavours, delicately balanced individually in order to obtain maximum flavour, and to tame that wild beast that is chocolate.

“Rough” in particular was created around the famous “Golden Rough”, a treat brought to you by Nestle, which is toasted coconut covered in compound chocolate, sounds tasty right! It is, believe me 🙂

“Rough is a dynamic and wonderfully balanced flavour, mimicking toasted coconut flakes drizzled with honey and sweet milk chocolate”

Individual Notes

Let’s get into the primary flavour. Believe it or not it’s the coconut! This coconut is somewhere in the middle ground between a candy coconut like you’d get in a Bounty, and freshly toasted realistic coconut flakes. Sweet and rich with a texture that will have you checking your teeth to see if you have any left behind!

I may be mistaken, but I also get a little bit of a honey note in here too, perhaps caramel. It’s in the mid-range right between the coconut and the chocolate bridging the two flavours, with a bit of syrupy sweetness. It’s light and delicately blended, and likely added purely for that reason, a bridging flavour.

The chocolate. Rather than a slab of chocolate which can be thick, obtrusive and overwhelming, think chocolate flakes, or a chocolate syrup drizzled over the coconut. It’s obviously designed to be in the background supporting the coconut, because it acts as a base note giving the entire flavour an underlying chocolate feel instead of dominating. A very good decision I think.

Finger Test

We all taste a new flavour on the knuckles or a little on the finger right! It’s a great indication of how accurate a flavour is by putting it directly on the tastebuds!

“Rough” is a spot on “Golden Rough” on the finger test. Strong coconut flakes you can almost feel on your tongue, enveloped by tasty sweet milk chocolate.

Inhale & Exhale

On the inhale, you’ll first notice the coconut, how could you not! In fact, your first few inhales will likely be all coconut, but as you settle in a little you’ll begin to pick up on that honey, or caramel I mentioned earlier. It follows the coconut through the inhale with both intensifying and reaching a peak at the top. You’ll also get a very very faint chocolate here, not enough to call it a chocolate yet, but combined with the coconut and honey, the inhale is super tasty.

Once you’ve hit that peak at the top of the inhale, and you begin your exhale, you’ll notice a slight cocoa note on the tongue, it’s only light and definitely only momentary, as things begin to thicken up. You’ll also notice the honey/caramel note here. It takes on a bit of a black honey tobacco feel through the exhale, but is important in bringing forward the chocolate.

As the coconut blends back a little the chocolate and creamy texture of it washes over the coconut strengthening that chocolate feel, engulfing the coconut and pulling it in to create that wonderful chocolate and coconut combination. The rest of the exhale really does feel like you’ve just polished off a Golden Rough and you’re experiencing the aftertaste, sweet and rich, leaving you with a wanting for more!

Final thoughts

As many know, coconut is not normally my thing, but this is wonderful.

Both the coconut and chocolate have been blended exceptionally well, to give a very balanced, and rich, but not overly rich flavour.

TIP: One thing that I’ve noticed is that on a higher wattage you tend to get more chocolate throughout the entire vape, where on lower, you might experience more coconut.

Would I change anything? I’m in two minds about this.
On the one hand there is that mid-range honey note, I noticed that the more I vaped this flavour the more prominent it became with an almost black honey tobacco feel. Pulling it back a little and adding some marshmallow or custard would allow the chocolate to still come through without any dryness and blend with the coconut just as well.
However, changing this might ruin the profile, and this is quite an accurate blend already.

If you love your chocolates, especially Golden Roughs, I highly recommend this flavour. Well done guys!

Presentation:

Very very impressive presentation here. The Chocolatier Vape Co have done a wonderful job on their bottles and labelling. I received 100ml Chubby Gorilla styled bottles, tinted, with childproof and tamper proof seals, with a needle tip dispenser in the cap.

The labels are your usual matt labels, with each flavour sporting a different shade of colour. The branding is gorgeous with the company name and flavour name front and centre on a patterned background. There’s plenty of information here too, from ingredients, warnings, born date, size, PG/VG ratio, social media info, barcode and company details.

I love to see labels with all of that info, it shows that Aussie juice companies are serious in competing with international brands.

Test rigs:

Original Haku Cruiser running a single 0.17 framed staple coil on a mech mod.
Augvape Intake RTA with a 0.2ohm Stainless coil running @ approx 50-80 watts.
