Voopoo Drag X Plus Reviewed

Voopoo Drag X Plus Reviewed

Welcome back, if you’ve been keeping an eye on me, you’ll know that I released my review of the Voopoo Drag 3 a few days back. Voopoo’s latest twin battery iteration of everyone’s beloved Vape Mod.

Today, I’ve got something similar, it’s actually so similar, you could almost call it a Drag 3 with a single battery.

That’s right Voopoo have released the latest of their Drag X range and this time around it’s called the Drag X Plus!

Let’s take a look at what Voopoo have done with the new Drag X Plus!!

Big thanks goes to Voopoo for sending this directly through to me for review!

General Info

At first glance at the Drag X Plus, you’d be forgiven for thinking this might just be a Voopoo Drag 3 ‘Mini’, presenting almost identically to the Drag 3 but narrower due to the single battery capacity versus the twin battery capacity of the Drag 3.

The looks are identical, from the front fascia/display panel, through to the finish of the zinc alloy frame, and even the leather heel options that are available. The only difference is the size due to the battery capacity, and the branding.

Let’s forget the Drag 3 for now and focus a little on what’s been improved since the original Drag X shall we!

The Body

The body of the Drag X Plus is made from a zinc alloy frame, and is really lightweight for that material. Normally zinc alloy can be heavy, not not here, this is light as a feather. It’s really similar to previous Drag X’s, with the front panel barely changed, just a few of the accents around the facia as well as the general overall colouring.

The Drag X Plus also comes with some different leather styles on the heal, Classic, Smokey Grey, Marsala, Prussian Blue, and Sandy Brown are the available colours.

The heel is really comfortable with it’s padded leather being both a little rough to the touch, but soft when squeezed. It’s a lovely feeling device to hold.

Up top, we have a 510 connection, the first time we’ve seen this on a Drag X, and it’s a welcome addition. It has a spring loaded pin, so most other atomizers will work on here, and it sits proud of the top of the device by about 1/2 mm, to make sure your tanks and RDA’s do not get locked down with the threading. It’s a large enough gap to limit tanks from getting stuck, but also small enough so that you’ll barely notice the gap between the top of the device and bottom of your tank, you’ll likely not even see any light through there when the tank is secured properly.

On the edge we have the button panel, which is identical to the Drag 3 and similar to previous Drag X’s, with a large round fire button up top, a decent sized 0.96in TFT colour screen, two smaller buttons below for wattage adjustment and a USB Type-C charging port below that.

Just like previous Drag X’s this device is powered by an external battery with the battery bay accessible via the slide and open battery bay on the bottom of the mod. This time around however, Voopoo have offered up the option to not only use 18650 batteries, but also 21700 batteries which is a huge upgrade!

The POD Tank & Coils

The Drag X plus ships with Voopoo’s TPP Pod Tank, which is also available on the Drag 3, I’ll not go over this too much, but if you want to know more about this tank, I’ve given it a thorough writeup on the Drag 3 Review.

In essence, its just like Voopoo’s Pnp Pod Tank which screws into a standard 510 connection, but still allows you to use your TPP Pods via the base’s magnetic ring connection. The main differences between this and the PnP Pod tank is the size of the tank, now with a 5.5ml capacity, and also a new range of coils, TPP coils.

Just briefly, these coils are not only larger, but also wick ‘a lot’ faster due to their larger wicking holes. As a warning, because they wick so well, you might just end up with a little eliquid seepage under the PODs that you’ll need to clean up every so often. This has been my experience with the TPP Pods and coils so far. Not ideal, but also not a huge issue either.

The coils you’ll receive in the box are as follows. If you’d like to read more, you can over on my Drag 3 review.

  • TPP-DM1 : 0.15 Ohms (Power range: 60 – 80W)
  • TPP-DM2 : 0.20 Ohms (Power range: 40 – 60W)

Airflow

As you can see above, the TPP tank has cyclops style adjustable airflow, it provides a large amount of air to the coil, but can also be adjusted right down to a MTL vape if you so wish to, you’ll just need to match up the correct coils. (Not sure if Voopoo have them for the TPP range yet)

One thing to note about this adjustable airflow, there are no stoppers either side, so you’ll need to adjust it while looking. No biggie, but makes adjusting airflow in dark rooms a bit of an experiment!

Battery

The major improvement over past Drag X versions is the ability to use 21700 batteries. You’ll find the battery bay on the bottom of the device, and it uses Voopoo’s tried and true slide and open battery door, that you’ll find on most of their other newer devices. It’s a little flimsy but does the job well, and holds batteries nice and solidly.

Voopoo have also included a battery sleeve, for those times you’d like to use 18650 batteries, simply slide your battery into the sleeve, put the sleeve into the battery bay and you’re good to go. There’s not rattle at all, and batteries sit in the battery bay securely.

One thing I would have liked to have seen here is the ability to use 20700 batteries also. A little extra spring in the battery bay would have allowed this, just for those who have those types of batteries lying around.

If in an emergency, you need to charge the device with the battery still inside, you can do so via the USB Type-C charge port on the front. It supports 2A charging, so you’re battery will be charged in no time. This port can also be used for software updates.

Filling

Filling the TPP Pods are very much the same as the PnP Pods. Lift the silicone plug on the bottom, fill it up and plug it back in. You’re done. Quick and easy. While you’re there, give the bottom of the POD a bit of a wipe as well as the inside of your TPP Tank base, just to get rid of some of that e-liquid film that is often produced from the seepage.

Any Leaks?

No big leaks, but these new TPP coils wick really well. And in doing so, will seep a little eliquid through the bottom of the coil. Be prepared to wipe the bottom of the POD down from time to time due to this seepage.

Usage

The Drag X Plus is really simple to use. Just like the Drag 3, (same software) you’ll find it intuitive and not quite limiting, but kept simple.
Voopoo have left out everything except your Smart Variable Wattage, and RBA mode, preferring to keep things easy to use, than offer every single option. Having said that there are also a few other things you can do, such as change the display themes from a Portrait to a Landscape theme, as well as reset your puff counter, and locking the device. Here are some of the button combinations.

5x fire-button = turn on/off the device
3x fire-button while on = switch between RBA and SMART mode
Fire-button + up = lock/unlock the device
Fire-button + down = reset puff-counter
Hold up and down = switch between UI (Iron or Core)

  • Smart Variable Wattage
An obvious title, this is what you’ll use when using the Pod Tank and pre build coils. The smart mode self adjusts the first time you put in a fresh coil to the recommended wattage. You can adjust all you want from there though.
  • RBA Mode
This mode is for when you’re using your own tank, and need a little more control. It won’t set itself according to the resistance of your coil and the wattage cap is not there.

Pros:

  • Comfortable and stylish
  • 510 connection!
  • Can use 21700 as well as 18650 batteries
  • Super simple usage
  • Includes TPP Pod tank and POD
  • New coil range
  • Fantastic Saturated Flavour
  • Runs up to 100 Watts
  • USB Type C
  • 5.5ml e-liquid capacity

Cons:

  • A little seepage under the PODs
  • No way to lock only wattage
  • Cannot use 20700

Where to Buy:

You can pick up the Voopoo Drag X Plus directly through Voopoo’s online store for about $55 USD, which is quite a good price for a twin battery device. It’s quite an impressive setup for that price range.

Conclusion

All in all the Drag X Plus is a nice improvement over the original. The addition of 21700 battery as well as the maximum 100 Watt limit, are both welcome changes.

Putting a 510 connection on the top was also a great addition, instead of having PODs sit directly in side the body of the device, the device has a little more protection from any coil seepage, as well as you can now put any tank you like on top!

There are some con’s, but nothing that is a deal killer. I’d still recommend this at least a single battery device, even if I’ve found that the new TPP Pods and coils can be a little leaky. Having said that, the new TPP coils do pack a punch, have brilliantly saturated flavour, and will perform well over their maximum recommended wattage limits.
