OXVA Velocity Pod Mod + RBA Review

OXVA Velocity Pod Mod + RBA Review

Today’s review is a new product by a relatively new brand on the vape scene. OXVA have made a huge splash with their first few devices showing that as a company, they are striving to bring Vapers products that not only deliver on their needs and wants, but doing it with style and quality also.

The Origin series has seen them go from a startup to a well known and respected company in a very short period of time. Their attention to detail and ability to bring to market devices that appeal to users are two of the reasons they have been so welcomed, throw in some excellent coils and long battery life, and there’s just no stopping them.

Well they’ve released their latest product, a Pod Mod, or is it a Mod that takes Pods? Either way, this product is heading in a big direction and has so far been received very well by testers around the globe!

Let’s take a look at the OXVA Velocity Pod Mod plus their RBA coil!

Big thanks goes to OXVA for sending this directly through to me for review!

General Info

The OXVA Velocity steps things up a few notches with a bunch of features you might not expect if you’re familiar with their Origin range. From having the ability of using 3 different battery types, to it’s 100 Watt power capacity, huge 5ml e-liquid capacity, new flavoursome UniPro coils, 510 adapter and leak-free operation, it’s an all in one device you’re likely to fall in love with.

Advertised as the world’s smallest 21700 device (I don’t think it is actually) the Velocity uses a Buck Boost converter for a more even Wattage, has a lovely bright and crystal clear screen with 3 power modes so you can get the best vape possible.

The Body

Falling in at approximately 100*27*40mm, the OXVA Velocity is quite a large size for a Pod Mod, mainly due to it’s ability to take up to a 21700 battery, it also has some decent weight to it, so definitely not the most pocket friendly device. It’s design is quite streamlined though, with rounded corners, bevelled edges, and smooth finish to offset the size a little.

I’m guessing that the main frame is made from some type of alluminium alloy or zinc alloy, as I mentioned earlier, there is a little weight to it, even without a battery. It’s not heavy, but a little heavier than other Pod Mods I’ve used previously. This is likely due to it’s size, and solid construction.

The build quality is brilliant, it’s sturdy and solid, with no catches anywhere, and all of the panels line up correctly. The battery door is reliable and doesn’t feel flimsy at all.
About the only thing that annoys me a little is that I get a little bit of a plastic creak if I put any pressure on the display. Definitely not a big issue and probably something that can be fixed with a little padding behind it from factory.

The version that I’ve received is what I believe OXVA’s Christmas edition, with it’s green festive packaging, and green envelope inside thanking their users for their continued support. I’ve seen a few reviews out already of this with the same marbleised side panels, so I’m guessing most reviewers received the same style.

Looking at the panels, they’re quite nice, smooth and glossy, but don’t be fooled into thinking that they’re some type of veneer because they’re not. They are stickers, very very nice quality stickers, but stickers none-the-less.

From top to bottom, you’ll notice the POD recess first, it’s quite a large recess to allow for those 5ml capacity pods, with 4 strong magnets and 2 gold plated connection points. Below the POD recess and on both sides, you’ll notice the 3 hole airflow inlets which provide air to the pocket below the POD, this lets plenty of air in from both sides.

On the front face, you’ll find the main control section. A large square fire button is provided above the display, with 2 smaller buttons below it for wattage control and navigating through the menu.
The display is quite a vibrant screen, with a lovely layout of data, and really clean type face used. You can change the colour of the screen by going into the menu and adjusting the setting.

Under the buttons you’ll find a USB Type-C port for charging and software upgrades, which is always nice to have for when you’re caught without a charger.

And below all of this is your battery door, that swings open to reveal a nice large battery bay.

Battery

As you can see from the above images, the battery bay is exposed by sliding the battery door on the bottom open, it’s held in place by a nice little metal catch, the battery terminals being gold plated are going to give you some nice contact with the battery for less battery sag.

The battery bay is huge, and there is a reason for that, it can house a 21700 battery! 20700 and 18650 batteries are also able to be used, 20700 natively, and 18650’s using the provided grey silicone battery sleeve. I would encourage you to get some 21700 batteries though, they give great performance and huge battery capacity.

You’ll also find a USB Type-C port on the front of the device, for charging your battery if you find yourself without a charger. I haven’t used this but it’s likely that you’ll get a pretty fast charge out of it. It may not charge completely in an hour, due to the big capacity batteries available but it’ll do in a pinch.

The PODs & Coils

OXVA go above and beyond as usual and give you 2 different PODs in the kit. One is for use with their ‘new’ UniPro coils which are larger and can pump out alot more flavour and vapour, and one is for the original UniCoils that came with the OXVA Origin range of devices. This is a really nice touch considering many may have invested in coils for their Origin’s and have some left over.

The PODs are of a fairly typical design, 4 magnets on the bottom, 510 drip tip connection at the top, a push in coil recess at the base, and fillport sealed with a silicone plug.

Made from PCTG plastic the PODs are tinted, but not too dark that you can’t see the eliquid inside, I’ve had no issues at all seeing my eliquid levels while using them.

You’ll get 2 coils in the pack, both of them of the new UniPro range. Both are Mesh coils with excellent mesh coverage and almost zero break in time with minimal new cotton taste. They last a good while too! I’ve been using sweetened juice lately, and these coils have lasted me a good 2 weeks before needing to be changed out! Great coil life!

  • 0.15 Ohm
This coil is my pick of the two, good for anywhere between 60-80 Watts of vaping pleasure it can handle some pretty big pulls, and provides excellent flavour.
  • 0.30 Ohm
I’ve used this coil quite a lot and find it almost on par with the 0.15 Ohm coil, but the lower wattage usage is not quite my style. Still a great coil and perfect for those who want to see a little more battery life out of their batteries.

Airflow

The airflow for the Velocity when using the Pods, like many, enters the side channels and flows back up through the bottom of the coil providing air straight through the middle of the mesh for better flavour.

Just like the previous Origin and Origin X, OXVA have provided an airflow adjustment ring that screws onto the bottom of the replaceable coils so that you can adjust your air. Having to pull your POD out to adjust your airflow might annoy some, and it’s not ideal, but on the flipside, once you’ve got it set, nothing is going to nudge it or make any accidental adjustments.
In my opinion, OXVA made a good choice with this and direct airflow adjustment under the coil works perfectly here.

You will need to make sure you remove this airflow ring when replacing coils, I’m unsure whether replacement coils come with an airflow ring, but just like the Origin’s I’d hold onto it just in case!

Filling

Filling the Velocity Pod is super easy. OXVA have made the Velocity Pods, top fill which is excellent, and of course you can fill whilst the Pod is still in the device. Sealing the fill port on top is a silicone plug that you simple lift, push your eliquid nozzle in there, and start filling. The fill port is quite large, with plenty of room to avoid any air pockets or back pressure.

Larger bottles will knock up against the 510 drip tip while filling, but it’s not a deal killer, your nozzle will still reach inside the fill port easily for no mess filling.

510 Connector

This is one of the Velocity’s main selling points, it’s solid 510 connector plate, which allows you to run any RDA, RBA, RTA, or RTDA on what was just a Pod device. A few companies have tried this before, even OXVA released such a thing with the Origin X. They’ve nailed it this time though.

With a spring loaded gold plated pin, and solid clips on the sides to hold the adapter into the body of the Velocity, this adapter improves upon multitudes of previous attempts.

If you’re familiar with other devices, and their 510 attachments, you’ll know that quite often their either flimsy, or just not strong enough to hold those tall tanks on very well. You’re always worried about the tank falling off and don’t even mention the wobble that occurs if everything isn’t held snug.

OXVA have made this so strong, that they’ve needed to provide us with a special tool to remove it! Actually, it’s not that bad, you can undo it with a tank, but if you’re using a short and stubby RDA, you might just need to use the tool.

Anyway, the way the clips work on the 510 adapter, once you’re locked in, you’re locked in. There’s no removal except what feels like a forced leverage to get the adapter out.

The trick to it, is to screw the tool into the adapter, and simply push the tool toward the shorter side of the device with a little force, and you’ll feel it give. I’ve seen so many people try with so much effort to lever it against the long edge which is just making your job more difficult since the clips are along both the short sides. Lever it against the short edge and you’ll have it removed in no time.

RBA

The Velocity Kit doesn’t come with this, but it’s an extra you can purchase, and let me tell you boy is it worthwhile! This has got to be one of the best RBA coil heads available on any currently offered Pod Mod.
The size of it is a great start, measuring in a little bit wider than a standard UniPro coil. This gives much more room to build than many other RBA coils, for easier building and better wicking.

It’s a two post design (meant for single coils) but OXVA have also provided a second set of screws to use so it doesn’t really matter which orientation your legs go (under over/left right) you can clamp them down.

There’s plenty of room for your coil also, and with that, also plenty of room for cotton.

This RBA works really well for both open DTL vaping, but also for crazy tight MTL draws.

There are a few things that OXVA have thrown into the pack that might just get you over the line and turn this into a ‘must have’ for many vapers, those being the provided 510 adapter so that you can dry fire your coils on another device, and my favourite part, the additional airflow control adapter and airflow reducer for true MTL vaping. OXVA even give you an alternative drip tip for use with your newly restricted RBA for some very comfortable MTL vaping.

Let me tell you, if you’re a die hard MTL vaper, you’ll appreciate these add ons, they do actually provide a nice truly tight and restricted MTL experience. That air flow reducer, big kudos to OXVA for including that, it makes all the difference!

Building is really easy on the OXVA Unipro RBA Coil too, trap your coil legs under the screws, tighten and clip your legs. Dry fire your coil, then wick.
When wicking I’ve found cutting tails shorter works best, leaving your cotton sitting just on top and perhaps a small amount inside the wicking ports. This will give you a lovely crackle as well as make sure your wick is wicking fast for higher wattage vaping!

Any Leaks?

None. I’ve only experienced the smallest amount of condensation under the POD (which is normal for a bottom coil POD) No leaking what-so-ever.

Usage

Using the Velocity and it’s simple but elegent interface is a pleasure. There’s just enough settings to give you some flexibility, but not enough to confuse.
Your main 3 modes are ‘Smart’, ‘Power’, ‘Volt’. You can also change the colour of the display from the menu system too.

The ‘Smart wattage’ system works pretty well automatically setting wattage depending on what resistance your coils are. You’ll find that this might not work so well with the RBA coil, but you’re likely to want to set your own wattage level using that.
Here’s a short list of commands that you can use on the Velocity.

  • Turn on/off – x5 clicks of the fire button
  • Wattage up/down – use the up down buttons
  • Settings – click the fire button 3 times
  • Puff clear – Hold Fire button + down button simultaneously
  • Change colours – Hold Fire button + up button simultaneously

Pros:

  • 3 Battery options
  • Stylish and ergonomic
  • Excellent flavour
  • Versatile! The 510 adapter is wonderful!
  • UniPro RBA Coil rocks
  • New UniPro coils have excellent flavour and last quite a while
  • Bright and Vibrant screen
  • Great e-liquid capacity
  • Brilliant display and menu system

Cons:

  • Small creak in plastic when pressing against the display
  • Asks if new coil everytime you remove the POD and put back in.

Where to Buy:

The OXVA Velocity is only just starting to ship to many stores, so you’re best bet is to get on the pre-order list over at the OXVA website. It’s priced at a very reasonable $49.99 USD which is brilliant for what you’re getting.
Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the UniPro RBA Coil too!

Conclusion

I have hunted and hunted for Cons to list for the Velocity and really all I can come up with is a small creak in the plastic display when putting a little pressure on it, and the annoyance of being asked if I am using the same coil if I remove the pod and put it back in everytime. That is it. And as you can see, those are some pretty minor flaws.

I have thoroughly enjoyed taking a look at the OXVA Velocity, this relatively new manufacturer are making some really great gear, and doing it very well.

Great battery life, excellent e-liquid capacity, fantastic display and menu system, all in a versatile device that can switch from being a classic Pod Mod to a full blown Mod just by inserting the 510 adapter.
Not to mention the absolutely brilliant little Unipro RBA coil, which is THE BEST single coil RBA insert I have seen for any device, which can also be tuned down for a perfect MTL vape.

They really have thought of everything.

If you’re looking for a pod mod this year, the OXVA Velocity is the best you can get right now, and likely for the for-seeable future. (well, until OXVA release their next big thing!)

I highly recommend one of these for anyone starting out, or even looking for a no fuss device to use all day every day. Excellent work OXVA!
