Lost Vape Centaurus DNA 250c Box Mod Review

Boy have I got something cool for you today!

Lost Vape are quite a popular company around the vaping scene. They’ve been around for quite a while, most notably known for their “Paranormal”, and ‘Therion” mods, they burst onto the scene with their DNA capable devices, becoming quite popular and known for their quality builds.

Well, they’re back with a dual battery mod, and a DNA 250c one at that!

The Review

Straight out of the box this screamed quality to me, from the packaging, with it’s wax sleeve, gold foil print, and golden strap to help you take it out of the box. The device is no different. It’s quite a striking looking mod, with real carbon fibre panels, faux leather, and a brushed steel finish perfectly machined with modern lines and and edgy shape.

The Lost Vape Centaurus, is a dual battery mod, with an Evolve DNA 250c board in it. Yep the ‘C’ stands for colour. Coming in at 91 x 55 x 26mm in size, and 173 grams this is a sizeable device, with a bit of heft to it compared to many other recent products, but also one of the smallest dual battery devices I’ve seen. Even compared to their ‘Paranormal’ that some are saying this is a replacement of, the Centaurus is slightly narrower.

You can see that it does resemble the Lost Vape Paranormal quite a lot, however it is a lot less bulky, with a sleeker design.

Style, Fit and Finish

Lost Vape have knocked this out of the park in my opinion, this device is beautiful, and not just the one that I received, there are various finishes available from carbon fibre to stabilised wood and even abalone, all with various leather options for the heel of the device. All of them quite striking, you’re bound to find something to match your individual tastes.

Everything just fits together so well, the buttons, the edging and machining are fantastic and spot on right down to the last millimetre. Even the battery door underneath, is spring loaded, and super easy to open, all the while holding together quite firmly.

The steel used in this device has a unique brushed texture to it, giving it a high end polish. There is nothing cheap about this baby!

510 Connection

The 510 Connection sits at one end of the mod, and the 26mm width of the device, allows you to get some decent sized atomizers on there. Up to 25mm in fact, anything larger than that will see your atomizer hang over the sides of the mod unfortunately.

The 510 is spring loaded, which is great, but there is one issue. It’s raised above the main body of the mod by just under 1mm. Obviously Lost Vape have done this on purpose as the Paranormal was the same, I’m guessing to stop you from scratching up the top of your device. It does cause a gap however, and one that more than a few might find is a deal killer.

Controls and Usage

I won’t go too far into the DNA 250c as there have been plenty of reviews written about it before, and there is plenty of info out there on the web on how to use it. The DNA board has been capped at 200Watts, (obviously 2x 18650 batteries will never get to 250Watts), nothing to complain about there.

You’ll get some pretty standard screens by default with the Centaurus, factory standard in fact. It’s something I wished Lost Vape might have customised but I suppose they were leaving that up to the user. It just left things a little unpolished in my opinion. A custom Centaurus theme would have been really awesome, specially if it was a little easier on the eye than the standard Evolve one. Either way, users can do this themselves, there are plenty of themes you can side load onto your device available on Evolve’s site and community message boards for use with their Escribe Software.

You have your normal round fire button, 3 additional control buttons and a Micro USB port on the front of the device, all laid out in the familiar DNA 250 format. The finish on these is fantastic and very clean looking with a nice feel to them.

I would have liked to see a type C USB port, but that’s obviously a 3rd party thing, and Evolve would need to come to the party with that one. (C’mon Evolve!!)

Battery Connection

The door for the dual batteries swings open, and is spring loaded, so sliding the clip on the bottom, flips the door open for you, this is a little rigid, but that’s a good thing, considering how many devices with these sorts of doors, end up with hinge and catch issues. I don’t predict there being any issues with this door, it’s a snug fit, and there is plenty of catch for the door to hold onto.

You’ll notice the battery terminals, run to a circuit behind the battery swing door, and provide two additional connection points for the DNA board. Having this at the bottom has allowed Lost Vape to keep everything to do with battery connections in the one area.

The top terminals inside the device are also spring loaded, so there is a little resistance but a cushioning effect when putting batteries in and closing the door. A little shock absorbsion just adds to the overall quality feel I think, and makes sure, most batteries, even odd sized 18650’s all work.

Charging

Obviously, it’s recommended to charge your batteries in an external charger, but the onboard charging works quite well due to its cell by cell battery monitoring and integrated 2A balance charger

Another fantastic thing about the DNA 250c board is that it has a Power Bank function. The provided micro USB to female USB connector allows you to plug your mobile phone charging cable into it and charge your phone from the existing power in the cells, it’s been reported that it can charge out at 1.5Amps.

Pros:

  • DNA Board
  • High Quality Styles and Finishes
  • Comfortable shape and size
  • High Performance device
  • Advanced configuration options
  • Fast firing

Cons:

  • Raised 510 connection (leaves gap when atomizers are attached)
  • Might be a little difficult for new comers to get used to the menu
  • Micro USB should be USB Type C by now – (Evolve’s fault lol)
  • Overhang with larger atomizers, and tanks with bubble glass look a little strange.

Conclusion

I’m really impressed by Lost Vape’s latest addition to their line-up. I’ve been using this for the last 3 weeks or so, and it’s been a delight all the way.

It’s impressive for not only it’s build quality and of course the DNA board, but it looks fantastic, clean lines, leather and carbon fibre, it really is a sexy looking device.

Is this a Paranormal? The next version of? Is it the Paranormal Reborn? Probably. It’s a dual battery mod with a DNA 250c board, so it certainly fits the bill, I think this one is way sexier though, and who doesn’t like new and improved!

I think I’ll be using this for a long time to come, so ‘Reborn’ or not, this is the device to look at when you’re in the market for a DNA 250c with dual batteries!

Excellent work Lost Vape!

Where to Buy:

You can pick the LostVape Centaurus DNA 250c Mod directly through Lost Vape or any of their resellers for around the $160 USD mark which makes it a tad pricey against other devices, but having a DNA board, it’s reasonably priced.
