The Review

Famed for breaking out of the mould, the original Profile Mesh RDA sported a huge surface area using mesh instead of traditional coils for heat transfer. It was quite successful due to it’s great flavour, large simple build deck and smooth airflow.

When you’re onto a good thing, you usually can’t improve on it very much, but Wotofo have heard the community’s small gripes and in fine form, have released the 1.5 to show that they are indeed listening and committed to bringing us the best products they possibly can.

The Profile is a Mesh RDA, meaning, instead of your typical traditional single coil to heat up your cotton, a mesh sheet is used instead. Mesh heats up quicker, has a much larger heat coverage area, and very rarely gets hot spots.

The Deck and Top Cap

This is a pretty impressive deck, at 24mm in diameter its the same as the original, but, compared with the original Profile, the 1.5 has slightly more room due to the thinner walls of the top cap. The clamp system is similar, but not exactly the same, most notably is the adjustable spring loaded ceramic bed that the cotton sits on top of. This time around it has grooves to improve the juice flow through the wick and give more efficient wicking. This ceramic ‘bed’ can also be adjusted up and down within reason, to cater to how much cotton you want to use.

Straight out of the packet, I found the setting perfect for the aglet ‘shoelace’ type of cotton strips that Wotofo supplied, they are quite wide but fit comfortably without choking.

The top cap is a separate piece to the centre piece that houses the airflow.
It’s a heavy piece with a very solid feel and a conical top to provide even more flavour!

This top cap sits inside of the side piece allowing tabs on the side of the top cap to drop below for air adjustment. Turning the top cap, moves those tabs to block airflow in a stepped configuration first covering the top row, and then onto the bottom row to really tighten the airflow down.

The Mesh and Building

Wotofo supply x3 grades of mesh to use with the Profile 1.5 RDA.

– nexMESH CHILL A1 0.15 ohm, rated for 60-80 watts
This mesh has hexagonal honeycomb designed holes in it.
“Smooth and mellow, a more laid-back flavor experience, great vapor
production.”

– nexMESH TURBO A1 0.13 ohm, rated for 60-80 watts
The Turbo features large rounded square cutouts.
“Bold and clear, a more heightened flavor experience, thick vapor
production.”

– nexMESH EXTREME A1 0.16 ohm, rated for 60-80 watts
The Extreme is familiar, with it’s crossed over intertwined wire build.
“Robust and strong, a vigorously warmer flavor experience, heavy vapor
production.”

Each sheet has the obvious thicker piece at the end that is to go into your clamps, but differ in the type and design of the mesh.

Building on this is a breeze. The phillips head side screws are easily unscrewed and the clamps naturally separate, allowing you to trap your mesh in there with ease. Wotofo recommend using their mesh tool in order to shape your mesh strip first, you then clamp each end in place and you’re ready for a quick dry burn.

Using the supplied cotton with the aglets, makes wicking really simple. As you feed the agletted end of the cotton under the mesh, you push down lightly on the spring loaded ceramic bed to feed the cotton through.

Unlike a normal coil, the squonk pin feeds juice in from under the ceramic bed, so you don’t need to keep longer tails on your wicks. Your wicking is already taken care of.

Once your cotton is through, you can cut your cotton short, (you’ll get two wicks out of one piece) and tuck them down off to the side neatly.
Now you just have to make sure you saturate your cotton completely before taking your first toot! (Do this, you do not want a dry hit from mesh!)

The Airflow

The airflow is quite good in the new design, there are x10 airholes on each side over 2 rows. Whereas the original had x19 over 3 rows on each side in a honeycomb configuration. I think it’s probably a little bit of a step back, and over simplified, as the honeycomb configuration of airflow will give a much smoother flow.

With 2 full rows open, you’ll get a good full direct to lung airflow happening.
The angle of that top row of holes is a little bit of an issue, and because the air doesn’t directly hit the mesh, it will compromise your flavour.
Ignoring the top airholes, this RDA really sings with a slight reduced airflow, blocking off the top row leaving only the bottom open.
Doing that provides you with a nice dense airflow and a lot more flavour.

Pros:

  • Easy building
  • Great Flavour
  • Mesh fires up quickly
  • Great build quality
  • Plenty of accessories
  • Good selection of mesh strips
  • Reduced chamber for flavour

Cons:

  • Prone to dry hits
  • Cannot use top airflow holes without losing flavour
  • Need to use a lot of juice and keep saturated

Pricing

The Profile 1.5 Mesh RDA retails for and average $39.99 AUD which is quite a good price for what you get.
You can purchase it directly from the Wotofo Online Store, or from various resellers around the country.

Conclusion

Technically, the Profile 1.5 is a fantastic RDA. The build quality is fantastic, it’s simple to build on and easy to use.
For a Mesh RDA it is fantastic, and really does tick all of the boxes.
Smooth airflow, plenty of options, large deck with restricted chamber for flavour, are all great selling points.
So if you love your mesh RDA’s, you’re gonna be pretty excited about this one!

On the flip-side, I’ve had a lot of trouble getting used to Mesh. To me, it’s almost impossible to wick efficiently, and you’ll likely get a slight dry hit, a few hours after building, and be left with a slightly burnt vape until you re-wick again. Even when squonking, (which is a lot more convenient for a mesh RDA) you need to be giving your bottle a squeeze before almost every hit to make sure you’re not caught out with dry-ish wick.

Having said that, I’ve been running mine at anywhere between 60 – 80watts, which seems to be the perfect wattage for all 3 different mesh strips.
My favourite is the CHILL, with it’s honeycomb configuration, it seems to be cool enough to allow the wicking to keep up, all the while putting out a great dense vape, with heaps of flavour.

One thing that I could see Wotofo improving on this design, is to move that squonk opening to somewhere that it doesn’t suck back the e-liquid that it’s already pushed into the wick. When squonking, you can actually see the wick getting saturated, but then as the bottle pulls air in it also pulls some of the juice back, resulting in a slightly less saturated wick and mesh.

Other than that, I have no complaints, this is quite a well thought out design, with only a few small annoyances. Should you rush to go out and buy it if you already have the original? I think it’s worth it. I don’t think there are a crazy amount of significant improvements to shell out for a slightly redesigned RDA, if you’ve only just picked up the original, but if you’re a fan of the original, you’ll likely have already put your order through anyway. Good news for you guys though, you’re purchase won’t go to waste, because this will likely become your latest favourite RDA!
