What are Second Generation Vaporisers?

Second generation vaporisers are a little more advanced than the First Generation vaporisers.

They are usually slightly bigger, about the size of a large marker. The most common is the Ego series made famous by Joyetech.

Whilst most First Gen’s are automatic (they start working when you inhale), most Second Generation Vaporisers are manually operated. You push the button, which fires the coil, take a draw, and then release the button.

Due to Joyetech’s influence in the industry, other companies adopted use of their 510/ego connection. It is now one of the most common connections available on second generation devices.

Form Factor

As mentioned earlier, second generation devices are commonly cigar or marker sized. They’ll often have a small button on the side so that the user can activate the devie, take a draw, and then release the button.

As first generation vapourisers predominantly used cartomizers in order to deliver the ejuice, second generations mainly use a different delivery method.
The principle is the same, eliquid storage, coil, wick etc.. However where the form factor does change is in the capacity.

Clearomizers are the most popular “atomizer” to use with second generation vapourisers. A Clearomizer will usually consist of some type of tank, (plactic or glass), and a coil and wick. These are all built into the same housing. An ego/510 connection will then connect the clearomizer to the battery.

A few examples of clearomizers are:

  • Kanger ProTank
    kanger4
  • Aspire Nautilus
    nautilus3 (1)
  • Innokin iClear
    iclear-30b-innokin-bdc-tank-rjp7

Maintenance

Most clearomizers are fairly easy to maintain. If you choose to, you can rebuild the heads, by recoiling and rewicking. If you’re not confident rebuilding or just don’t have the time, you can simply purchase the replaceable heads for as little as a couple of dollars each.

This really is the beauty of clearomizers and what makes them so beginner friendly. The product research and development teams behind these companies, understand that not everybody is going to sit down and recoil or rebuild their atomizers. The benefit for them becomes the fact that users will continue to purchase replacement parts therefore providing the companies with an income from disposable parts. It’s a win-win situation.

Recharging & Safety

Most typical Second Generation devices use a USB charger where one end goes into a usb jack, and the other the ecig battery screws down onto it. As with anything rechargable, care must be taken. You should:

  • Only use the supplied charger
  • Not charge unsupervised
  • Not overcharge
  • Ensure all contacts are clean
  • Charge the item away from flammable items and in an area with maxumum airflow

That’s all from me at the moment on Second Generation Vapourisers, I wil come back to this post periodically to add more information.
