Geekvape Aegis Boost Plus Review

Geekvape Aegis Boost Plus Review

It’s the beginning of the week, so why not get stuck into a bit of a hardware review!

Anyone who follows me online, will know that I had a lot to say about the original Geekvape Aegis Boost. It was an excellent product, with some unfortunately unforgiving negatives. From leakage to awkward filling, it came close to making up for them with it’s flavoursome vape and easy to use, strong design, but not quite.

This new iteration has seen Geekvape address the previous model’s issues, and not only that, but introduce a few other enhancements also!

Introducing the Geekvape Aegis Boost Plus kit!

Big thanks goes to Geekvape for sending this through for me to review!

First Impressions

Wow! That was my first impression. What a far cry from the original Aegis Boost this is! Larger than life, with a bigger POD, improved display, and powered by an external 18650 battery instead of an internal one are all huge improvements over the first Boost, and Geekvape haven’t stopped there!

There’s been significant improvements to the POD’s, they are apparently now fused together to prevent leaking, with a larger fill port on top, and the airflow swapped out to the other side, so that you don’t have to hold your e-liquid bottle at an angle holding it up to the sunlight to fill.

Geekvape, I think you’ve done some great things here 😉

The Main Body

If you’re familiar with the original Aegis Boost, you’re going to be a little surprised at Geekvape’s latest variation.

The Aegis Boost Plus, like the original, is made from a zinc-alloy skeleton over rubber and leather accents and plastic. Like other Aegis devices it is shock-proof, water resistant and dust-proof, making it a fantastic device for those who are always on the move.

Despite the similar appearance, a lot has changed. It is much larger. Not only in battery capacity (18650) but also in e-liquid capacity and general bulk of the device.
The main body is now, 114. 2 x 49.5 x 28.6 mm, which is a fair bit larger than the original 106.8 x 27.7 x 39.2mm.

You’ll also notice from the photos above, that Geekvape have spun things around a little, with the display and airflow control now on the same side as the drip tip, the juice fill hole has been moved to the grip side to give more room for filling.

The POD

It’s not just the main body that has changed since the original Aegis Boost, the POD’s have also. Where the fill port was on the same side as the airflow in the original, it’s now been swapped out for the other side. There were some users that were affected by an issue of liquid coming out of the airflow when filling, so moving that fill port should fix that particular problem.

The Boost Plus POD’s are also quite a lot larger than the originals. While the POD’s once held 3.7mls, they now hold up to 5.5mls! That’s a huge difference!

The fill port has also been changed slightly, to make filling easier and cleaner.

Even the drip tip has changed, not in looks and styling but in size, Geekvape have made it larger, as well as the connection point, so you can now put your favourite 510 drip tips onto the Boost Plus POD.

I won’t talk about the coils here, because just like the original, the Boost Plus takes the standard Boost KA1 mesh coils. You’ll receive a 0.4 and a 0.6ohm coil in the pack. It’s all down to personal preference as to which you use, and I’ve looked over them in detail before. But they are some pretty flavoursome coils that’s for sure!

Airflow

The clever airflow from the original is still here, it’s changed a little with a narrow wheel around the outside of the airflow adjustment, where the original moved all in one, but it’s kept very much to the same design.

The airflow adjusts from quite a tight mouth to lung draw, right through to an almost open, yet restricted direct to lung draw for those who like more air.

I do notice a little whistling when restricting it down below halfway unfortunately, which makes this quite a noisy vape for anyone looking to get a tighter, restricted airflow.

Battery

This is probably the improvement that I love the most. The ability to use an external 18650 battery. Geekvape have provided a battery bay in the new Aegis Boost Plus, so you can swap out your batteries on the go, instead of having to wait for the device to charge, like the original.

This has been worked in quite well, with a round threaded battery door on the underside of the device, that also seals against the rubber making sure to keep the Aegis Boost Plus water resistant.

It can be quite difficult to flip the little latch up, which might work looser over time, but for now, it’s quite stiff and not easy to get a fingernail under to lift. Catching the thread on the battery bay screw is also a bit of a challenge, you’ve got to make sure you’re putting a bit of pressure on it, while turning, and hope to hell you haven’t cross threaded it in the process!

Filling

Filling the Boost Plus is miles easier than filling the original. One nice improvement is the larger flatter surface of the POD where the fill port lives, it gives you a little more room to get a bottle tip in there. The fill port is also a little larger, which helps against back pressure and not having the airflow under the fill port, and having to redirect the nozzle at an angle is a godsend. 10 Points for this one Geekvape, you’ve improved usability by about 40% here.

Any Leaks?

No thankfully. It looks like Geekvapes new PODS with their specially sealed design do not leak like the originals. There is still a seam, but it looks like these are somehow fused together, rather than using a simple clip like the originals.

I have experienced a bit of seepage from the base of the coil though unfortunately, so owners of this new Boost are going to have to keep an eye on that and clean it out every so often, it seems to happen more as the coils get older, and have had more usage. New coils take a little while of use before beginning to seep.

Usage

With the other changes, also comes a change in software. While the maximum 40watt output hasn’t changed a lot, the user interface has.
The design is a little more techy, but laid out quite well, with everything being quite easy to read. I do think that some of the text is quite small which might have been improved a little more, and the use of space on the screen could have been further enhanced to offer up a sleeker look.

Some general usage instructions can be found below:

  • Five clicks of the fire button turn the device on/off
  • Three clicks of the fire button to enter settings mode
  • One click of the fire button in settings mode moves cursor to select parameters
  • Up and down to change parameters
  • Long press the fire button to exit settings mode
  • Up and down to change wattage or temperature
  • Up and down at the same time to lock screen
  • Fire and down at the same time to decrease brightness
  • Fire and up at the same time to increase brightness
  • Fire and up and down at the same time for stealth

Pros:

  • Large eliquid capacity
  • External battery
  • No leaking from PODS
  • Easy to fill/easy to use
  • Great flavour
  • Instant power
  • Can use 510 drip tips

Cons:

  • Display could have been further optimised
  • A little difficult to screw in battery door.
  • Slight whistle from airflow
  • Light seepage from bottom of coils

Where to Buy:

You can purchase the Aegis Boost Plus right now directly through the Geekvape Online store or through any of the many stores that stock their products. It’s priced at approximately $42.99 USD right now, which is a really good price considering the great vape you’ll be getting!

Conclusion

I’m so happy that Geekvape have released this version, not only with it’s extras but the fact that they’ve listened to vapers and fixed the problems of the original is fantastic.

Gone are the leaky POD’s, gone is the cumbersome fill port, the Aegis Boost Plus is an absolute pleasure to use and is now a device that I would happily recommend to people if they are looking for a new POD setup.

A few notable things that I’ve been particularly impressed with, are the switchover to external battery, and reconfiguring the general placement of fillport and airflow on the PODs.

No more waiting for the internal battery to charge before you go out somewhere, this can be your ‘only’ device, that you can just switch out the battery on when needed.

Also switching things around on the POD allows a user to fill easily without that strange airflow bump inside the chamber that requires you to hold your bottle at a strange angle whilst filling. You can also see your eliquid level a lot easier too!

One last thing that many might not notice. You can now put standard 510 drip tips on the POD, something that I know I sorely missed on the original. I’m sure you did too!

Great work Geekvape!
