Geekvape Aegis POD Review

Geekvape Aegis POD Review

Welcome back! Its the end of the week and I’ve got another hardware review for you!

Today I’ll be running through the Geekvape Aegis POD, showing you all of it’s intricacies, good and bad, and giving you my thoughts on it.

If you’re familiar with my past reviews, you’ll know that I was less than impressed with Geekvape’s Aegis Boost Pod mod, due to it leaking, being difficult to fill and not being able to see your e-liquid level properly. Well, those were my more prominent complaints. So today’s review will either further my criticism of them or praise them, either way, I’m sure you’re in for a good read 😉

Big thanks to Vapoureyes for sending this through for me to review, go check them out if you haven’t, lots of goodies over there.

The Review

The Geekvape Aegis POD is Geekvape’s answer to the Caliburn, to the Koko, to every other small, mouth to lung device out there. It’s designed to be rugged, pocket friendly, and the type of vape device you’d just pick up before you leave the house.

This small slim-line POD device is made from zinc-alloy and plastic, with leather accents and stitching. It’s advertised as being shock resistant, in fact it’s also IP67 waterproof rated, just like the Aegis Boost was.

Designed for Mouth to lung, the Aegis POD puts out a constant 18Watts of power from it’s 800mah battery, and 0.6ohm kanthal coil. You won’t have to stress about battery life because it’s capable of fast charging with it’s USB Type C charge port, (yes thats right, finally something with Type C charging!). You’ll likely not have to stress about running out of eliquid either because these pods can fill up to 3.5ml, which is a decent amount for a low powered device.

The Main Body

The main body is gorgeous. Plastic, leather and Zinc Alloy come together with exposed screws, stitched leather, and sleek lines to really emphasise that this is a Geekvape Aegis product. There is a little weight behind this small device too, which just adds to the quality feel.

The POD

The POD is a decent size and fills to 3.5mls of e-liquid when full. It features tinted plastic, with built in mouth piece, a clip on mechanism, and push in coils. There is a fill port covered by a silicone cover on the bottom, next to the coil, and some fins off to the side to allow air to enter underneath the Pod.

This is the bit that lets the quality of the device down a little in my opinion. While it certainly does the job with it’s viewable liquid through the tinted plastic, it’s comfortable mouth-piece and it’s strong design, it doesn’t line up as well as it should, and it just clips in and out. A little bit of force is required to remove it that feels unnatural.

The airflow seems like an afterthought, with 4 notches cut out of the bottom of the Pod to allow air underneath, and the design of the fill port is quite unusual. The fill port is quite deep and the silicone plug seems to just sit in there without a lot of restriction. This deeper fill hole also has a strange effect on filling, causing more airlocks and blow backs than it should. It doesn’t do it all the time, but when it does, you have no choice but to make a mess to force liquid into that fill port.

The Pod is a 2 piece, which is clipped together very similarly to the Aegis Boost Pods, with the bottom piece setting inside the top piece which is held down with clips. Inside, rubber/silicone grippers hold them together creating an airtight/liquid tight seal. All this is well and good, and a great idea in theory, but as always eliquid will always find a way, and you might just notice a little seepage from time to time as I have. Not a lot, and definitely not enough to warrant even wiping it, but it does happen.

Airflow

The airflow is quite nice. Unfortunately, Geekvape have kind of missed the mark on it though. The Aegis Pod puts out a very restricted Direct Lung draw, or a very open Mouth to Lung draw, not quite suited to either, but also failing on both. I’ve found myself using it more as a really restricted direct to lung device, because it just feels so strange having so much airflow on a mouth to lung draw.

This feels like Geekvape were trying to cater to 2 markets at once, but it just hasn’t worked out for the best. If you’re a mouth to lung purist, you’re not going to like this one, the same goes for those who like wide open direct lung hits.

And again, as I mentioned before, the 4 airflow slots cut into the POD, really feels like an afterthought. Not a bad idea to use the area for airflow, but an adjustable airflow in that spot would have gone over much better. If you’re looking for a tighter airflow, you could always tape over those notches, but hey, really not a job for us consumers to fix is it….

Battery

I have zero complaints here, the 800mah built in battery is great, there’s enough power in it to keep you going most of the day if not all of it, and with this device being USB Type C, it’ll be a really fast charge anyway.
While I haven’t exactly been timing it, I have noticed that this charges unusually fast, and I’m quite often on a full battery with a green light no longer than 20mins to half an hour on charge.

Filling

As mentioned earlier, the fill port is kind of weird on this, the silicone plug seems to not need a lot of force to push into the pod, and the fill port is quite deep, meaning you really have to push your eliquid nozzle in there.

Filling should be easy, but it’s not always. At times, you’ll get an airlock, and blow back out of the fill hole, and not be able to fill the pod without making a huge mess. Clearing it with a tissue has worked once or twice for me, but not always.

Any Leaks?

I’ve had no real leaks, except for one time I had it in my jacket pocket while out shopping, and I got back into the car with a pocket full of e-liquid. This could possibly have been a temperature shift, it’s quite cold here at the moment, and going inside a well heated store might cause a pressure change.

In normal use, taking a close look at the POD, you’ll notice there is some slight seepage happening. Mainly from where the pieces are clipped together. To highlight this, you can squeeze the pod while holding it at the top and bottom, and notice a little e-liquid appearing in the seam.

Not a complete deal breaker, since that small of amount doesn’t really affect performance, and certainly doesn’t get down into the main body of the device or on your hands at all.

Usage

Simple is as simple does, and the Aegis Pod is super simple. One button does it all. You’ll need to hit the fire button to take a pull, there is no auto-draw here. (It would have been a nice option)

You’re single button does two things, 5x clicks to turn the device on/off, and click once to fire. That is it. No modes, no locking.

Pros:

  • Simple to use
  • Elegant and stylish
  • Well built, great quality
  • USB Type C charging
  • Great form factor (comfortable)
  • Decent battery life
  • Fast charging

Cons:

  • Slight seepage at bottom of POD
  • Not quite MTL not quite DTL draw
  • No adjustable airflow

Where to Buy:

You can purchase the Geekvape Aegis Pod through Geekvape’s many resellers all over the world. But, Vapoureyes sent this through to me, so if you’re looking at picking one up, go visit the champions over on their online store, or one of their physical vape stores, and pickup the Aegis Pod for $44.95 AUD!

Conclusion

I’m really impressed by the styling and solid construction of this little pod. It has some real heft to it which further offers an impression of quality.
The airflow is ok, not quite what I’d expected. I was hoping to have a tighter mouth to lung draw on this, rather than it being so airy. Trying to do both MTL and DTL airflow with no adjustment is a disaster waiting to happen unfortunately. I’m probably dramatising it a little though, it’s not so bad that you don’t get used to it.

The juice capacity and battery size are both quite good for the type of device this is, you’ll not run flat nor empty in a hurry and if you do, a quick charge will have you up and running again quite fast.

One thing I really didn’t like here is the clip on pod. Magnets would have given this a much more polished and quality feel. It’s really a bit of a let down considering the high quality build of the rest of the device.
As I mentioned earlier, Geekvape have again gone with a 2 piece design for the pod with clips holding it together, sealed by silicone inserts. The movement between the two parts and small amount of seepage that I’ve witnessed doesn’t hold my confidence that these won’t leak on a larger scale down the track unfortunately. Another thing I’d have liked to see improved.

All in all, and despite those few things that could use some improvement, I think Geekvape have a done a good job with the Aegis POD, and there are going to be a few fans of it for sure. It’s a lovely looking device that feels great to hold, fires in an instant and pushes out a vape that you might expect from a much higher wattage.
